Personal Philosophy
Health education is promotion for the knowledge regarding the topic of health. Health education is important as the concept of health differs from other academic subjects. While not all of the academic subjects may be applicable in the future, concepts from health education should be applied throughout an individual’s life. Health is a broad topic that contains smaller focuses. By learning and applying these focuses, one can attempt to achieve their highest attainable health status.

Health education should entail topics pertaining to health. Health can focus on physical, social, mental, and emotional issues. Health can be perceived as broad and confusing for some people. Breaking down the concept allows for a better approach on the topic. In addition, not all health concepts may be applicable to some people. Although incorporating all aspects of health is important, certain focuses may be geared more towards an individual. By having health education separate the topics, people can learn the topics that fit their needs.

Health education is intended for everyone. No one should be excluded from education as it should be fairly accessible. The only limitation should be the individual’s own effort. Although students receive health education through school, there are various outlets for the adults through community programs. Community centers in each city have accessible information regarding city events and ongoing public health programs for the residents.

The responsibilities as a health educator include: advocacy for healthy behavior, execution of healthy behavior, and passion for health education. The essence of a health educator is to promote healthy behaviors that can be implemented into an individual’s daily living. Without the advocacy as a health educator, the message cannot be put out for others to hear and adopt. Without proper execution as a health educator, people may be interpreting the message incorrectly resulting in false facts. Without the passion as a health educator, working long term will feel tedious and productivity levels will be down. The implementation of the responsibilities demonstrate qualification and assurance as a promoter of health.

The future accomplishments as a health educator would be success for the promoting health program and growth in skill set for future programs. Working in public health allows a health educator to work their way up to higher positions eventually managing health programs. Small successes achieved in the low levels will allow for a strong foundation in the health programs. As one works at each level, the individual will gain experiences and skills that can be implemented into future programs. The skills will be valuable and applicable for certain positions.

Health education can be delivered through the community. Community programs can provide a great foundation for the children and adults to follow healthy behaviors. Through consistent enforcement, the behaviors can become a habit. Various aspects of the community can be reached through the extension of political systems, work agencies, and school systems.

Professional Statement
My particular interest in Community Health Education would be project management. Speaking with a CSULB Health Science Alumni at a campus event inspired me to openly look at project management as a career option. To reach my career goal as a healthcare project manager, short term goals need to exist. My short term professional goals include successfully completing the Masters in Public Health program at CSULB to advance my education, and working as a program coordinator to expand my skill set and knowledge.

My education and experiences prepared me for a health education career through the applicable experiences. CSULB prepared me for my health education career through some of the classes that focused on program writing. I worked collaboratively with other students to create a mock school-based program. My professional experience as medical assistant and program management assistant prepared me for my health education career by allowing me to experience the administrative side of the healthcare setting, and allowing me to experience the execution of a community program.
